Angela Merkel Awarded Cambridge Honorary Doctorate for Leadership and Global Diplomacy

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Law by the University of Cambridge in recognition of her leadership and longstanding contribution to international relations.
The honorary degree was formally conferred during a special congregation held on 24 June 2026. The University of Cambridge described the distinction as its highest accolade, reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, public service, science, arts and global affairs.
Merkel, who served as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 until 2021, was the first woman to lead Germany and remains the country’s only female chancellor. During her sixteen years in office, she became one of Europe’s most influential political figures, playing a central role in navigating the European debt crisis, migration challenges, and negotiations surrounding Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union.
In announcing the honour, Cambridge praised Merkel’s influence in shaping European institutions and her efforts to promote unity, cooperation and stability across the continent.
The ceremony was presided over by Lord Smith of Finsbury, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Due to exceptionally high temperatures in Britain, the event was held in the Chapel of Queens’ College instead of the traditional Senate House.
