Gamelan on the Champs-Élysées: Indonesia’s Historic Beat Joins France’s Bastille Day
Paris, France – This Bastille Day, the thunder of French tanks down the Champs-Élysées met an unexpected counter-rhythm: the resonant pulse of 200 Indonesian drummers. In a powerful display of diplomatic and military camaraderie, Indonesia, this year’s honored nation, marched proudly through the heart of Paris on Monday, marking a significant moment for both countries.
President Emmanuel Macron, addressing troops the day prior against a backdrop of heightened European tensions, announced a substantial €6.5 billion boost in military spending, framing it as essential for defending freedoms unseen since WWII. Yet, the parade itself pulsed with a different energy – one of international partnership.
Alongside 7,000 French troops, armored vehicles, and cavalry, and beneath fighter jets trailing tricolor smoke, the distinct sight and sound of the Indonesian contingent captivated onlookers. Led by Brig. Gen. Ferry Irawan, who called it a “very important and historic military and diplomatic collaboration,” their participation signaled Indonesia’s rising global stature as a major Asian economic and military power, represented by President Prabowo Subianto.
Beyond the spectacle – which included Finnish troops from Lebanon and Belgian/Luxembourg forces from NATO duty in Romania – the visit carried strategic weight. Indonesia is poised to confirm significant new purchases of French Rafale fighter jets and other defense equipment.
Amid exceptionally tight security, the day unfolded with Parisian flair: aerial acrobatics, traditional axe-wielding warriors, a drone ballet over the Eiffel Tower, and nationwide fireworks. But the enduring memory for many was the unique fusion of cultures – the deep, resonant beat of Indonesian drums echoing off Parisian facades, a tangible symbol of a strengthened alliance on France’s most iconic avenue.
