Rachida Dati: Prosecutors Seek Four-Year Prison Sentence in Corruption Trial
Paris | Paris Telegraph
France’s National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) has requested a four-year prison sentence for former Culture Minister and Paris 7th arrondissement mayor Rachida Dati in the corruption and influence-peddling case involving former Renault-Nissan executive Carlos Ghosn.
Prosecutors are seeking two years of the sentence to be served as an enforceable prison term, with the possibility of an alternative arrangement such as electronic monitoring.
The prosecution has also requested a €450,000 fine, the confiscation of approximately €900,000, and a five-year ban from standing for elected office.
Disputed payments linked to Renault-Nissan
The case concerns payments Dati received while she was a Member of the European Parliament between 2009 and 2019, with prosecutors focusing on work she carried out for the Renault-Nissan alliance.
The PNF alleges that Dati received around €900,000 from the company and that the payments were connected to her activities as a European lawmaker.
Prosecutors argue that the payments constituted compensation for lobbying or influence-peddling rather than genuine legal consultancy work.
Dati denies wrongdoing
Dati has consistently denied the allegations.
Her defence maintains that she was legitimately paid for legal services and disputes the prosecution’s interpretation of her activities and the payments involved.
Her lawyers are seeking her acquittal.
No verdict has been issued
The prosecution’s request is not a conviction or final sentence. It represents the position of the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office during the trial.
The Paris Criminal Court will make the final decision after considering the prosecution’s case and the arguments presented by Dati’s defence.
The proceedings also concern former Renault-Nissan chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn, who is being tried in absentia after leaving France and subsequently remaining in Lebanon.
